Old
Mine Cut or Cushion Cut Diamonds are
becoming increasingly sought after and harder than ever
to find. This particular diamond has a generous spread
of 1.25 Carats making it incredibly
rare.
The
Mine/Cushion Cut was last used during Queen Victoria's
reign and had a bias towards weight,
therefore these stones are always very chunky with a
heavy crown and thicker girdle. This means they often
weigh considerably more than the spread
indicates, as we believe is the case with this particular
stone. Each was cut by hand making them utterly individual.
The
18 Carat Gold shank
and setting are modern, and may have been required to
replace the original which was probably worn through.
However this in no way detracts from the stone, as Diamonds
are constantly reset and in some cases re-cut for use
in new jewellery. In that sense, jewels are probably
the most vastly recycled items in the world, and were
even before eco-friendliness was so important!
The
Diamond is approximately G-H colour;
quite exceptional in a Cushion Cut, and clarity P1
(visible with great difficult to the unaided eye.)
Perfect
condition.
