Description
A
highly unusual Brooch, featuring a George 111 Coin suspended
from a plain 9 Carat Gold Bar.
Both
items have been modified somewhat. Bars such as this are fairly
common and were used either as brooches or later as tie pins.
The plain bar has been fitted with a suspensory loop which
suspends the coin.
As
we are by no means coin specialists, and the previous owner
had no idea even where the item originated from, a little
detective work has been required. We have found that this
is a George 111 Gold Guinea dating from 1797
(dated to the reverse.) Coins of this type were minted until
1799 and are rather rare. This is fairly well worn and has
had a hole drilled through the top for the purpose of suspension
from the brooch.
A
unique and interesting item, it remains wearable
today and is certainly a conversation piece.
The
bar
measures 1.75" in length.
