Description
Although
synthetic corundum is worth far less than its natural counterpart,
at the time of this ring's creation laboratory grown Sapphires
were the height of modern technology and
therefore highly prized. Never before had man been able to
duplicate nature as perfectly or precisely, and forward thinking
purchasers were eager to own a piece.
Today,
synthetic gems are more common and therefore less impressive,
however it is necessary to consider the history of synthetic
Sapphire as it explains why such a large synthetic has been
used in such a high quality piece.
Its
design is typical of the Early 20th Century
penchant for geometry and clean lines. The setting has a beautiful
basket design but sits very flat and flush with the finger.
The rectangular Blue Sapphire measures 11x7mm
and is bordered by Single Cut Diamonds in
a millegrain setting which is time consuming to produce and
was therefore only used on quality items. The diamonds have
a total weight of approximately .50 Carats
and are wonderfully white and clear, whilst the white gold
shank is very slender and unobtrusive as per the fashion of
the time.
It's
a fabulous piece, and whilst the Sapphire has obviously reduced
the value somewhat it's such a stunning colour it would be
impossible for the untrained eye to know the difference. Despite
its age it remains in superb condition, if
I'm being very picky there is one tiny scratch to the surface
of the Sapphire, however this difficult to spot and commiserate
with age. It has, however been reflected in the price. The
setting measures approximately 16x12mm.
It
is a UK size Q, US approx 8.5.
