Description
Good
quality Sapphires are incredibly difficult
to find, so to have nine matching Cushion Cut Blue
Sapphires of superior colour and
clarity really is quite remarkable.
Towards
the end of the 19th Century, an era commonly referred to as
The Aesthetic Period, Crescent Moon
motifs became incredibly popular; in part due to the woman
seen as the leader of fashion at this time, Princess Alexandra.
This piece favours the more valuable of the favoured gems
of the time and judging by the extremely high quality
of the piece it was more than likely specially commissioned.
We
have seen other similar brooches to this but all have thus
far been vastly inferior in terms of quality. The Sapphires
are quite simply breathtaking as the photographs
attempt to display. They do not really do justice to the richness
of the colour, which is heightened by the contrasting White
of the Old European Cut Diamonds.
The
brooch itself is unmarked but is more than likely 18
Carat Gold and is beautifully crafted. It's weight
is a great indication of quality. It features an elaborate
Gallery edging and a fabulously high quality safety catch
to the underside of the pin which prevents it from unhooking
when worn.
It
really is the Sapphires which are the star of the show as
they are THE most amazing colour and beautifully
clear. The central Sapphire is approximately .50 Carats
in weight and the others graduate down in size.
It
is in superb A1 condition and measures 2"
tip to tip.
